Club suspends in-person services for 14 days
The National Press Club Board of Governors voted unanimously Monday night, March 16, to suspend the Club’s in-person services for members and guests for a minimum of 14 days in response to the dangers posed by the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic. The suspension of activity commenced immediately after the vote. It shuttered operations in the Fourth Estate and Reliable Source restaurants, the members-only gym and the resource library. Journalism Institute's March 17 program on frivolous lawsuits postponed
The National Press Club Journalism Institute has postponed its Sunshine Week program that was scheduled for Tuesday, March 17. The panel discussion on frivolous lawsuits and their impact on journalism in the public interest will be rescheduled. Enter your best news photos from 2019 in Club's annual journalism contest
The National Press Club wants to recognize your exceptional news photography in its annual journalism contest. The contest includes an award for excellence in an individual news photo. Photos taken during 2019 will be considered. Only one news photo should be submitted per entry and people are limited to three separate entries at most. The photo awards are intended to honor professional photojournalists who have produced outstanding work, either independently for news organizations or as employees of those news organizations. Due to elevated concerns about the spread of the coronavirus and for the safety and security of National Press Club members, guests and staff, the Jazz & Journalism event commemorating jazz trumpet legend Chet Baker scheduled for Thursday, March 19, has been postponed. Books & Brunch cancels March 21 meeting; Next meeting April 18
Books & Brunch has canceled its March 21 meeting to adhere to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak. This change in scheduling will shift the discussion of "Olive Again" to April 18 and the discussion of "The Library Book" to May 16. The group meets at noon in the Fourth Estate restaurants. If you have a gift for funny writing, the National Press Club wants to see your work. The Angele Gingras Humor Award is aimed at those with a talent for humorous writing for newspapers and news websites. The award is named for a longtime Club member who had a talent for humor writing. Club wants to award you $750 for your best political writing and analysis from 2019
The National Press Club wants to see the best political reporting and writing from 2019 for its annual journalism contest. The best work will be recognized by the Lee Walczak Award for Political Analysis. This award is named in memory of Walczak, a Washington editor, bureau chief and White House correspondent who worked for Bloomberg News and Business Week. Entries should be one article or a series of no more than three articles on a consistent topic.
