Panel to look at secret money in political campaigns
The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the club’s Professional Development Committee will look at the secret money that will fund many of the campaign ads that will air between now and Election Day. Club to hold legal workshop Sept. 20 for bloggers and freelancers
The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Media Law Resource Center Institute will present a one-day workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 20, aimed at freelancers, bloggers and other independent journalists working without the benefit of a legal department. Media lawyers will address libel, privacy, newsgathering and the Freedom of Information Act, copyright and digital law, how to protect oneself from lawsuits, and other issues. Spelling bee returns Sept. 21
The Club's spelling bee, pitting politicians against journalists, returns Wednesday, Sept. 21. Doors open at 6 p.m. The competition begins at 7 p.m. Food and drinks will be served. The 2013 champion, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), leveraged his victory into a vice presidential nomination. The 2015 victor, Rep. There's no debate: Celebrate with former NPC President John Cosgrove
Former Club President John Cosgrove, a member for more than six decades, is holding his “Can’t Wait to be 100” party the same night as the first presidential debate. The event will take place in the ballroom at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept, 26, just hours before Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump square off in the first of three debates. NRCC head to discuss 2016 House elections on Thursday

W. Virginia lawmakers to discuss legislation to protect retired miners' benefits
U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) and Rep. David McKinley (R-W. Va.) will discuss legislation designed to protect the pensions and retiree health benefits of retired coal miners at a Club Newsmaker Wednesday.
