Last month Scott Applewhite donated one of his Pulitzer Prize-winning photos to the Club, one that depicts then-President Clinton as he headed to make a statement about the impeachment inquiry and to apologize for his conduct in the Monica Lewinsky affair. The photo is visually striking, showing Clinton emerging from the colonnade at the White House. We're most grateful for the gift, and it will hang with our other Pulitzer photos. I was at the presentation ceremony and told Scott how much we appreciated his gift. He then gave the most interesting talk about how the photo was created. Alas, I…

Dunn, Enoch Honored as Top NPC Volunteers
Remarks from President Sylvia Smith Tuesday evening as she presented the Berny Krug Award to the 2008 co-chairs of the Events Committee, Frederica Dunn and Joe Enoch: If I heard it once, I heard it five dozen times: The Club is more lively this year. Whether that’s reality by a numbers count is irrelevant because our members clearly feel there’s more to do, attend and participate in. Here are some examples: a Super Tuesday returns party followed by debate-night watching and an election night blowout. A picnic and children’s holiday party that exceeded all past attendance levels. Movie nights…

Remarks by President Sylvia Smith Tuesday as 35 Club members received awards for their spirit of generosity in volunteering time and talent to the NPC in 2008: Thirty three years ago, board member Vivian Vahlberg suggested creating a Press Club awards program that would recognize members who had done the most work for the Club over the previous year. The formal title is the Hard Work and Inspiration Award but has always been informally known as the “Vivian.” And it has always been one of the special pleasures of presidents to have an opportunity to publicly thank the stellar volunteers of…

James Mulva does not yet drive a plug-in or hybrid car, but at a Jan. 13 luncheon, the chairman and CEO of ConocoPhillips was adamant that the Obama administration focus on the energy opportunities. “In just seven days, our new president takes office, [and] his confidence and calmness are reassuring,” said Mulva, pointing to one of the solutions that the president-elect has suggested is the creation of a green energy economy. “We agree that we must reduce the environmental footprint of energy production and consumption.
