Iraqi Spokesman Lauds Status of Forces Agreement with U.S.
Most Iraqis think the Status of Forces Agreement their government recently signed with the U.S. "is good for them and the best available arrangement possible at present," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told a Dec. 11 Newsmaker. The SOFA is part of a strategic framework agreement and defines the role of the U.S. military in Iraq whose UN mandate expires at year's end. The Club presented its Centennial Founder’s Award to Toyota in recognition of the automaker’s support of Press Club programs and events during 2008 – our centennial year. The award was presented by NPC President Sylvia Smith to Ed Lewis of Toyota’s Washington office at a ceremony Wednesday evening. Gordon Peterson is 500th New Member of 2008
The National Press Club Board of Governors welcomes the 500th new member approved this year, ABC 7/WJLA senior correspondent and anchor Gordon Peterson. Having covered news in Washington for four decades, Peterson has been called the "Dean of Anchors" in the nation's capital. His was one of 78 applications approved this month, capping a year of strong recruitment for the NPC. As part of the celebration of the Club's centennial, the board has waived initiation fees for applicants in 2008, representing a savings of up to $350.

AP senior photographer J. Scott Applewhite presented one of his two Pulitzer Prize-winning photos to the Club on Dec. 17 at an NPC Photography Committee meeting. The photo, which Applewhite described as from “the cave-painting stage of digital photography,” shows President Clinton walking in the Rose Garden on Dec. 11, 1998, to make a short statement on his impeachment inquiry. Market Storm Fails to Shake Faith in 401(k) Plans, Survey Says
A collapsing stock market has not shaken investor confidence in their retirement plans, according to a survey released at a Newsmaker on Friday, Dec. 19. The Investment Company Institute analyzed data from more than 22 million 401(k) retirement savings accounts sponsored by its members and other large financial administrators.
