Hilarity ensues at Dave Barry's insanely funny discussion of "Insane City"
Where can you find retirees from New York who have lost their eyesight and hearing, but then get driver's licenses? Well, Miami, of course! Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist Dave Barry, whose syndicated column for The Miami Herald kept the nation hiccuping with laughter from 1983 to 2004, regaled a National Press Club audience with tales from the palm tree-lined beaches of "Insane City" at a sold-out Book and Author event Friday. "Insane City," Barry's first solo adult novel in more than a decade is the tale of Seth Weinstein and his destination wedding in Florida. But, as Barry has explained…

Presidential debate moderators assess their performances on “The Kalb Report”
Moderating a debate is tricky business for a journalist, the 2012 presidential debate moderators told veteran newsman Marvin Kalb Monday on the most recent edition of “The Kalb Report.” PBS' Jim Lehrer, ABC's Martha Raddatz and CBS' Bob Schieffer say they wrestle with whether to use reporting skills to press the candidates or to hold back and let the candidates slug it out. Lehrer, a veteran of 12 presidential debates, moderated the first of three contests between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. He said moderating differs from being a journalist interviewing…

Congress faces an ambitious agenda, but immigration reform cannot wait another political season, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Jan. 14 at a National Press Club luncheon. “Some argue that immigration reform should be punted again. [But] Congress should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time,” he said. Comprehensive immigration reform “goes to the heart of who we are as a people,” said Villaraigosa, who has served as mayor of Los Angeles since 2005. He was chairman of the 2012 Democratic National Convention and is a past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. “We are a…

Fiscal cliff resolution slowed by lack of women negotiators: pro-choice group
Averting the fiscal cliff would have occurred before the last possible moment -- as it did last week -- if women were in charge of Congress, the leader of a women's advocacy organization said Jan. 7 at the National Press Club. U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and Republican members of Congress in general “just want to stand around and pound their chests rather than getting things done and solving our nation’s problems,” said Emily’s List President Stephanie Schriock. “You can’t tell me that if we had two or three women involved in this fiscal cliff debate in the last month that we wouldn’t…
