Baseball commissioner Manfred promises Rose decision, explores expansion to Mexico
A decision on reinstating Pete Rose to Major League Baseball will be made by the end of the year, Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred told host Marvin Kalb Sept. 28 on the latest edition of "The Kalb Report." “His requests, or various requests, for reinstatement have been out there for a long time, and he’s entitled to a definitive decision, and I'm going to give him one,” Manfred said of one of the most contentious, long-standing controversies of the game. Rose, one of the great ball players of all time, was drummed out of Major League Baseball in August 1989 amid accusations that he gambled…

The arts are for everyone, and the National Endowment for the Arts plans to make sure that’s the case through a new initiative called “Creativity Connects,” which NEA Chairman Jane Chu unveiled at a National Press Club breakfast on Monday. “When it comes to the arts, there is no such thing as a marginalized population,” she said. Change is rapidly arriving in U.S. collegiate athletics, but it may be only the beginning of what’s to come, one of the nation’s most reform-minded commissioners of a major athletic conference told a National Press Club luncheon audience Sept. 21. “We are in significant evolution,” said Bob Bowlsby, chief executive of the Big 12 conference, one of the so-called top five “power conferences” of large universities. Citing a litany of ills and pressing issues facing college athletic departments and their governing body, the National College Athletic Association (NCAA), Bowlsby likened the ferment…

Catholics address Pope Francis’ U.S. trip in the context of climate change and poverty
Three members of the Roman Catholic hierarchy sought to prepare the way for Pope Francis' U.S. visit by telling a National Press Club Newsmaker Wednesday the papal encyclical on climate change had the human face of some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Archbishop Thomas Wenski, of Miami, the leader of the group, acknowledged they do not know what Francis will say during the six-day papal visit starting next week. "That's above our pay grade, I guess," Wenski said, adding it was clear they assume the pope would focus on the theme of his encyclical, "Laudato Si." "It is no…

Public support, political will needed for Mars mission, astronauts say
NASA expects to send humans to Mars within the next two decades, but it can only do so with the green light from Congress and the White House, astronauts told a breakfast crowd at the National Press Club Monday. Col. Terry Virts, a former Air Force pilot, and retired astronaut Mark Kelly, whose twin brother Scott is currently the subject of a year-long study in space, insisted that public support and political will are key to realizing what would be a very expensive Mars mission. “The best scientists and engineers in the world” are continually developing projects at NASA, Kelly said, but a…

Jindal on Trump: "He may be Hillary Clinton's only hope"
In calculated stinging remarks, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal Thursday characterized fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump as "dangerous ... a narcissist ... an egomaniac madman" though at his core he is "insecure and weak." "Donald Trump is for Donald Trump," Jindal told a news conference at the National Press Club. It was almost certainly the harshest criticism of Trump yet made by members of the vast array of Republican presidential candidates. "If we nominate him, he will self-destruct in a massive way in a general election,"Jindal said. "He may be Hillary Clinton's only hope." "He…

Transportation Infrastructure Panel Advocates Long-term Planning and Funding
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) and Teamsters President Jim Hoffa urged broad, long-term planning and funding for transportation infrastructure at a Newsmaker event at the National Press Club on Wednesday. Foxx noted that the 34th short-term extension of the Highway Trust Fund is now in effect and that, "This is what is slowly killing our transportation system." But even a solvent Highway Trust Fund is not the goal, but a tool, he said. He offered the goal of reducing congestion and travel times. Including fuel costs, "Americans are…

GOP presidential candidate Sen. He also vowed to lead Senate opposition to the nuclear arms deal with Iran, including a government spending shutdown if necessary. The third-term senator is counting on a strong showing in his native state's GOP primary and support from fellow Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona in New Hampshire to bolster his so-far dismal standing among Republican…
