Burgers to Biodiversity: Grunwald links diet to climate change
In a sweeping critique of the global food system, journalist and author Michael Grunwald told a National Press Club audience July 10 that agricultural practices and daily dietary choices are rapidly degrading the planet. “Even if we quit fossil fuels,” he said, “we’ll keep hurtling toward climate chaos if we don’t solve our food and land problems.” Grunwald spoke at a Headliners event about his new book, We Are Eating the Earth. He asserted that agriculture drives nearly one-third of global climate emissions, yet remains one of the least addressed components of climate change. 'Even if we…

Media covered up 1980 Iran hostage deal, the ‘October surprise,’ author tells Club
Since April 1991, Craig Unger has been ringing the bell on allegations that Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign worked behind the scenes on a hostage deal with Iran – called the “October surprise” -- that would benefit the candidate at the expense of Jimmy Carter in that year’s election. Unger has a new book out on the topic, not his first book on this issue, and he used a National Press Club Headliners Book Event on Oct 22 to restate why the conspiracy matters now more than ever, just days away from the Nov 5 Presidential election. “I’ve written six books on the Republican assault on democracy.…

Club raises dues $1 per month for most members
National Press Club dues will rise $1 per month next year for most Club members. The Club’s Board of Governors approved at its Oct. 21 meeting the $12 increase in annual dues for 2025. The board acted after an informal vote was taken at the Oct. 18 General Membership Meeting. There was no quorum at the GMM, so the vote was a sense of the membership. Nearly every person in the audience of about 50 supported the increase, which will help the Club fund priorities and keep pace with operational costs. “We have a high number of hands up,” said Club President Emily Wilkins. “More than I was…

Improving the health of the nation’s veterans, preventing their suicides and reducing their homelessness are among the progress areas in the Veterans Administration cited by VA Secretary Denis McDonough during a Headliners Breakfast event at the National Press Club Tuesday. On the health issue, McDonough described benefits being received by veterans who served at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base in Uzbekistan as part of the U.S. war in Afghanistan. Commonly known as “K2,” Karshi-Khanabad is a former Soviet base that, according to McDonough, veterans called a “toxic soup” of chemical exposure. He…

Election officials face huge disinformation challenge
Voting in this year’s election will be recorded and counted securely, but election officials face unprecedented disinformation challenges, election fraud experts said at an Oct. 28 National Press Club Headliners Cocktails & Conversation. Election administrators learned a lot responding to the balloting difficulties posed by the pandemic in 2020 and are poised to put that knowledge to work this year, said Jennifer Morrell, CEO and co-founder of The Elections Group. “The 2020 election was the most secure ever,” Morrell said. “The 2024 election will be even more secure and better run.” But…
