After years of corporate hiring programs aimed to increase diversity in U.A. newsrooms and the entertainment industry, Latino journalists, editors, and managers remain few and far between. According to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released at the National Press Club Oct. 5, Hispanics represent 18% of the population but hold only 12% of jobs in the media industry. Lack of citizen soldiers diminishes military readiness, Reserve official tells Post 20
Without citizen soldiers -- the National Guard and Reserves -- "we can't go to war," retired U.S. Army Gen. Jeff Phillips told National Press Club American Legion Post 20 at its meeting Thursday, Jan. 12. Phillips, executive director of the Reserve Organization of America (ROA), warned that "our military readiness is in peril" because of the lack of citizens willing to volunteer for service in the armed forces. The setting for Eileen O’Reilly’s first speech as National Press Club president illustrated one of her goals. Club displays Austin Tice banner in F Street window of National Press Building
In its latest effort to keep the case of award-winning journalist Austin Tice top of mind in Washington, the National Press Club recently worked out an arrangement to display a large banner with the words BRING AUSTIN HOME at the street level on the F Street side of the National Press Building near the historic Fox Arch.
