Every year, the National Press Club's popular book fair raises money for the Club's Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library. But this year, the book fair also helped students in desperate need of books of their own. The Nov. 17 book fair marked a partnership between the Club and the SEED school, a public charter school that serves at-risk students with campuses in Anacostia, D.C., and Baltimore. Naziha Réjiba, editor of the Tunisian online news journal Kalima, said she knows what to expect when she returns home: surveillance, harassment, and threats conducted by one the world’s most repressive governments. “While I’m speaking, many homes of Tunisian journalists are completely surrounded,” Réjiba, one of four recipients of the 2009 International Press Freedom Awards, said Nov. 19 at the National Press Club. NPC Mourns 12 Journalists Killed in Philippines
The National Press Club mourns the 12 journalists reportedly killed while covering a local gubernatorial candidate's attempt to file election papers in the Philippines' Maguindanao Province on the island of Mindanao. Early reports from the Philippines state-run media say 46 people, including 12 journalists, were slain, allegedly by supporters of the incumbent governor. Liz Carpenter, Lady Bird Johnson's press secretary during her tenure as first lady and president of the Washigton Press Club in 1954, died March 20 in Austin. Carpenter was an advocate for women in all aspects of public life and was instrumental in what Helen Thomas described as "our first foot in the door" at the all-male National Press Club.
