Commerce Sec'y Announces Details of Obama's Export Initiative
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, speaking at a Luncheon Feb. 4, announced a three-point plan to implement President Obama’s goal of doubling the nation’s exports over five years to $3 trillion a year. Schieffer Wins NPC's Coveted Fourth Estate Award
Bob Schieffer, the longtime host of “Face the Nation” on CBS, has been named the 38th winner of the National Press Club’s highest honor, the Fourth Estate Award. The Club’s Board of Governors unanimously voted to give the award to Schieffer for his exemplary career at CBS as well as his extraordinary contributions to journalism and the Club over the years, said NPC President Alan Bjerga. Snow Closes Club at 1 pm Friday, All Day Saturday; Monday Follows Fed Gov't
Due to weather conditions, the Club will close at 1 p.m. today (Friday). Taco night is canceled, and the Fourth Estate Restaurant will be closed. The Club will be closed Saturday, including restaurant operations. If the federal government is closed on Monday, the Club will also closed.

Club Closes at Mid-day Tuesday through Wednesday
Due to the impending snowfall of Tuesday evening and Wednesday, the National Press Club will close as soon as practical at the end of lunch service today and will remain closed through Wednesday. There will be no restaurant, library or fitness center service Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Events scheduled for Tuesday evening and all day Wednesday are canceled or postponed. Club Closed, Thursday, but Haitian Ambassador Event Proceeds at 1 pm
In keeping with policy that when the federal government is closed the Club is closed, the Club will be closed for all member services today, Feb. 11, including both restaurants. The Club will open on a limited basis with limited staff to accomplish two news conferences at 1 p.m. One of the news conferences is with the Haitian ambassador to give an update on earthquake recovery. That event is a Speakers Committee Newsmaker and is open to credentialed media and Press Club members.

Club Applauds Senators for Bill to Improve FOIA
The National Press Club lauded a bill soon to be introduced in the Senate that aims to speed up the processing of public requests for documents under the Freedom of Information Act. Two senators who have long championed press freedom and open government legislation, Democrat Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont and Republican John Cornyn of Texas, unveiled the Faster FOIA Act. Haitian Ambassador Advocates Rebuilding a "Streamlined" City
Port-au-Prince, the devastated capital of Haiti, cannot be rebuilt as it was; it must be streamlined, Haitian Ambassador Raymond Alcide Joseph , said Feb. 11 at a Speakers Committee press conference. “Nature has done what we could not do as politicians,” he said of the city built for 150,000 but inhabited by 2 million. Coast Guard Chief Concerned about Proposed Budget Cuts
Adm. Thad W. Allen, commandant of the Coast Guard, said he is concerned about the cuts in the agency's 2011 budget proposed by President Obama. At a Feb. 12 Luncheon, Allen said the funding is expected to drop by 3% to $10.1 billion, and active-duty personnel would decrease by up to 1,100, to approximately 41,984. Allen said that the budget contains nearly $1.4 billion to replacing aging ships and equipment, especially high endurance cutters.
