National Press Club recognizes excellence in journalism
Our reputation as “the world’s leading professional organization for journalists” is epitomized by the achievements of our members and the outreach we do to encourage excellence in our profession through the annual NPC Journalism Awards. Congratulations to NPC members Alison Fitzgerald, Angela Greiling Keane and Molly McCluskey for their professional successes that reinforce that reputation (and then please read on to get an update on this year’s NPC Journalism Awards competition). Alison, an NPC member since 2002 and a newly elected member of the NPC Board of Governors, was part of a four-…

Inaugural Address
I want to begin my first message to the NPC members by thanking everyone who helped organize and who attended the International Inaugural Gala on Saturday evening. A number of persons approached me afterwards to say I should share my inaugural remarks focusing on the future of our profession and the National Press Club with our entire membership. Here is the text: Your Excellencies, Distnguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Fellow National Press Club Members… Thank you for a memorable international evening, and my personal thanks to all who worked so hard to make it happen. It reaffirmed how…

Let's Give Our Staff Some Holiday Thanks
All year long, the National Press Club staff works hard to make the Club a great place for members, clients and other guests. Now's the time of year when we get to show our thanks to them for their dedication by donating to the annual employee holiday fund. The fund is members' way of expressing our appreciation for our 97 staff members, several of whom have worked here since before I was born. We have an unusually dedicated cadre of people who work for the Club, and some of our longest-serving employees such as bartender Richard McClary and manager Mesfin Mekonen in the Reliable Source are…

What Have You Done For the Club Lately?
What have you done for the Press Club lately? That's the question I constantly ask myself and that I challenged members to answer this year. The Club is a lot of things to a lot of people, and the Club wouldn't be what it is without those same people - its members. Member volunteers are what make the Club the vibrant place it is. I'd like to take an opportunity to thank so many people for answering that question of what you've done for the Club lately by doing so much. It's easy to wait for the Club to give you what you want, to wait for someone else to deliver it. It's harder to plunge in…

Delicious Dog Days of August
It's August in Washington, and we all know that means nothing's going on. Except at the Press Club, of course. August in Washington also means Restaurant Week, and our Fourth Estate restaurant is an active participant in that. This year, in addition to the regular wonderful menu, members and visitors then and in September will be able to choose menu items that were served here to a group of prominent international chefs. On Aug. 1, our executive chef Susan Delbert served lunch to possibly the most prestigious group of chefs in the world, a French organization, the Club des Chefs des Chefs,…

Remembering Pioneering Journalist and National Press Club Member Helen Thomas
The passing of longtime UPI journalist Helen Thomas is a sad day for all journalists and especially for women who have followed in her pioneering footsteps. Helen was not only one of the first women to cover the White House, she was among the small group of women who were the first to join the National Press Club in 1971. While that happened way too late, I and others who followed her appreciate the determination she showed in knocking down the barrier that had kept women in the balcony at the Press Club. This year as we focus at the National Press Club on women, this history is especially…

Press Club Talks With Attorney General Holder on Press Freedom Matters
The National Press Club participated in the most recent small-group meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss our concerns about the Justice Department's recent subpoenas and search warrants issued against journalists. The seizures of journalists' phone records and e-mails, which are troubling to our members, have come in the midst of the Obama administration's recent wave of leak investigations. Because the Press Club is a leading voice for the diverse community of professional journalists, we felt it was important to participate in the meetings the attorney…

Press Club Asks For Answers In AP Records Seizure
In the wake of reports today that the Justice Department secretly obtained phone records of several of AP’s reporters and four of its offices, the National Press Club requests that the Obama administration publicly explain the reasons behind the action. The Justice Department disclosed to AP in a May 10 letter that the government had obtained last year two months of personal and professional phone records for individual AP reporters and from AP offices in the House press gallery and from AP bureaus in DC, New York and Hartford, Conn. The letter did not provide a reason why, AP said, but the…

Marking World Press Freedom Day Here and Away
As we mark World Press Freedom Day here at the National Press Club and around the globe, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on its importance. This day was created 20 years ago by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight press freedom around the world and defend the right of the news media to do its job freely and safely. Those values are things the NPC stands up for on a daily basis. The Club was proud to host the main event in the world for WPFD in 2011 when Mark Hamrick was president. That was the first and only time the event has been held in the United States. While the big UN…

The Club’s First Amendment Mission
The National Press Club is a lot of things to a lot of people. One of the things we strive to be is a place that focuses on press freedom, both overseas and right here at home. This week is Sunshine Week, a week devoted to open government that's celebrated by journalism groups all over the country. Here at the Press Club this week, we've got something for everybody for Sunshine Week with events put on by our Freedom of the Press Committee and by our Speakers Committee. We're also playing host to other journalism groups' Sunshine Week events. We're happy to be the place where journalists want…
