NPC statement on POTUS, Spicer comments towards journalists
The following statement is attributed to Jeff Ballou, president of the National Press Club. "The National Press Club welcomes a healthy discussion and debate on the stories of the day. However, it's absurd and unacceptable to insult and impugn the motives of credentialed journalists for accurate reporting. Additionally, the National Press Club is alarmed by reports that several media outlets who have regularly been credentialed to cover the White House and Congress were denied credentials related to the inauguration. We do not expect or anticipate the White House to like every story written…

Jan. 19 NPC Statement Regarding Inaugural Event
Dear members and guests, As you are aware, we have a private client very much in the news holding an event on January 19th in support of the 45th President-elect of the United States. Some weeks back, my predecessor wrote a column laying out pretty much everything that could truly be said about it. So I simply repost it here with the emphasis that, as Tommy’s former Vice President, he kept me and the board in the loop on this matter and my view has not changed. http://www.press.org/news-multimedia/president/2016/12/npc-statement-re… Please read it knowing that there is historic precedent, D.C…

Year End Message from Thomas Burr
Happy New Year to all of our members! As my time as president winds down, I wanted to thank all of you for helping the National Press Club continue to live up to its reputation as the world's leading professional organization for journalists. There was no shortage of news this year, and the Club maintained its much-needed voice to defend press freedom in the United States, especially during a challenging election, and around the world. A few highlights of our success this year include: A major renovation of our lobby – including soon-to-be-installed security gates -- to protect our…

NPC Statement Regarding Jan. 19 Inaugural Event
On Jan. 19, the National Press Club will be the venue for a private, client-paid inaugural ball for supporters of President-elect Donald Trump – as we have for incoming presidents of both parties for decades. Inaugural parties are being held at scores of venues in the Washington region as is generally the custom. This is not an event sponsored or endorsed by the National Press Club. Every president since William McKinley has automatically upon inauguration become a member of the National Press Club. This is part of our history. America's incoming president now joins Franklin Delano Roosevelt…

When Trump ditches the press, he ditches you, too
The following was originally published in The Salt Lake Tribune: When President-elect Donald Trump ditched the press pool last week, reporters were understandably upset and worried. You should be, too. If not for some sharp-eyed journalists who happened to see where the soon-to-be leader of the free world went for dinner, America and the world would have little idea where the incoming president had gone. This is not about reporters wanting to stand over the president-elect's shoulders to see how he ordered his steak, if he chose asparagus or mashed potatoes as his side or record his private…

The idea of a press pool that covers all of the president's movements is one that dates back to the…

Introducing the John Cosgrove Members' Lounge
John Cosgrove is an institution at the National Press Club. Serving as president in 1961, and as an active member since 1949, most -- if not all -- of our Press Club family know and admire Mr. Cosgrove. Cosgrove often speaks of how President John F. Kennedy came to his Press Club inaugural, where Cosgrove was sworn into office by Chief Justice Earl Warren. When you inevitably note how amazing it was that President Kennedy came to his swearing in, Cosgrove is known to deadpan: “Well, I went to his.” Cosgrove turned 98 years old on Sunday, and a few of us toasted him at his residence downtown…

One year ago, two journalists were taken from us
Since 1992, more than 1,200 journalists have been killed while doing their jobs worldwide. For too long, we have thought of violence against journalists as something that happened somewhere else, but this year, we’ve seen that assumption proved false over and over as journalist come under threat in the United States. One year ago today, our journalism community lost two of its members in nearby Roanoke, and their deaths dealt our community, both locally and nationally, a devastating blow. On August 26, 2015 – a young television reporter Alison Parker was setting up for a morning live shot…
