Larry McQuillan, former White House correspondent, dies at 70
Larry McQuillan, a long-time White House correspondent who since 2004 was public affairs director for the American Institutes for Research (AIR), died Sept. 19 after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 70 and had been a National Press Club member for nearly 11 years. A native of Stratford, Conn., Larry lived in Silver Spring, Md., and was a graduate of St. Bonaventure School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Member Maj. John Mark, Jr. Dies
Maj. John Mark Jr., 36, who joined the National Press Club in April, 2014, died suddenly of natural causes on Sept. 4. Maj. Mark, who enjoyed attending NPC luncheons, was serving his third year as a JAG officer at the Pentagon after having served a year in Kuwait. He lived in Arlington. A native of the Woodside section of Queens, N.Y., Maj. Mark was a graduate of Manhattan College and St. John's University School of Law. His father said his son was promoted posthumously from captain to major and that the exact medical cause of his death was not known.

Club Member Dick Sayler dies
National Press Club member Richard H. Sayler died Aug. 7, in Bentleyville Village, Ohio. Dick also lived in Baltimore. He had been a spousal member of NPC since 2013. Martha J. Lockwood, long-time NPC member, was his committed life partner. A native of Rochester, N. Y., Dick graduated from Dartmouth College and Michigan Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Michigan Law Review. He was law clerk for Chief Judge J. NPC member Rabbi Harold S. White dies
Rabbi Harold S. White, the Jewish chaplain at Georgetown University from 1968 until his retirement in 2009 and a National Press Club member since 2013, died Monday, Aug. 31 following a stroke earlier in the month while visiting his native Connecticut. He was 83. NPC member Connie Lawn sponsored Rabbi White’s membership in the Club as a communicator, and one of his last visits to the NPC was to attend a book party on May 21 celebrating her new autobiography, “You Wake Me Each Morning: The Final Chapter.” Rabbi White helped greet guests as he sat next to Connie as she signed copies of her book…

Obit: Philip Wakeford Steitz III, World War II veteran and journalist
Philip Wakeford Steitz III, a 31-year member of the NPC and a long-time resident of Washington D.C., died July 29 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 90. Philip was a member of the NPC from 1978 to 2009. His son, David, is an NPC member. Born in Evanston, Ill., Philip served during World War II as a sergeant major in the horse cavalry and then in military intelligence in the China-Burma-India Theater. James Ralph “Jim” McNelis, a retired senior vice president of Commerce Clearing House and a member of the NPC for some 35 years, died Jan. 29 at his home in Solomons, Md. He was 94. "The Press Club was such a big part of his life," said his daughter, Judy Szynborski, who recalled attending father/daughter dances at the Club when her parents lived in Washington, D.C. He lunched almost daily at the Club and was a frequent participant in Club trips, including those to Yugoslavia, Russia and China. Douglas R. Fleming, retired Navy aviator and newsletter publisher, died Jan. 21
Douglas R. Fleming, a retired Navy aviator, publisher and 36-year member of the NPC, died Jan. 21 in Alexandria, Va., four days short of his 94th birthday. Fleming was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, and grew up in suburban Cleveland. He became a Navy aviator during World War II and had hoped to join the State Department after graduating from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Told that he was too old for the Foreign Service, Fleming stayed in the Navy and retired as a lieutenant commander in Naples, Italy, in 1968, after his final assignment with NATO. He lived in Naples…

Douglas P. Baldwin, an international media consultant and a 53-year member of the National Press Club, died Jan. 2 in Snohomish, Washington. He was 79.
