John Fleming, Longtime Club Member, to be Buried at Arlington
John P. Fleming, a longtime member of the National Press Club and a Silver Owl, will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on June 20. He was 85 and died at home in Alexandria on March 30. The cause of death was cancer. The 8:45 a.m. funeral at Arlington will include full military honors. A brunch will be held immediately following the service in the Ft. Meyer Officer's Club. Former NPC Governor L. Edgar "Ed" Prina, 94, a prize-winning journalist and a Navy veteran of two wars, died May 14 in Washington, D.C. Prina, a Golden Owl who joined the Club on Dec. 1, 1948, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Funeral, wake information announced for former NPC waiter Andrew Price
Andrew Price, a much-loved waiter at the National Press Club who retired Aug. 3 after 45 years of service, died Friday of a heart attack, his family said. He was 66. The family will hold a wake Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Homes at 4001 Benning Road, NE, Washington, D.C. 20019. Tejinder Singh, founder and editor of India America Today (IAT) and a major contributor to National Press Club activities, died May 24. Singh, who was 61, chaired the Club's Newsmakers Committee for 2010 and helped arrange for numerous prominent speakers to appear at the Club. He also served on the Club's broadcast and international correspondents committees. The Wire was alerted to the announcement of the death June 29 of National Press Club member Albert Eisele that appeared June 30 in The Hill newspaper, which he co-founded in 1994 with fellow Club member Martin Tolchin. Eisele lived in Falls Church, Virginia, and died the day after his 85th birthday. Jonah Gitlitz, an award-winning former journalist and president and CEO of the Direct Marketing Association of Washington, died July 29 at the age of 92. He was a 25-year member of the National Press Club and a long-time resident of Washington, D.C. Gitlitz grew up in the Bronx, N.Y., where his father owned a kosher delicatessen. Wes Vernon, a pioneer in American radio news and proud National Press Club member for 53 years making him a Golden Owl, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 89 years old.
