Kemi Aubuchon, spousal member of the Club and widow of former Club President John Aubuchon died in February. Golden Owl Charles D. Brown, founder of 'Transportation Table,' dies at 102
The Club lost one of its oldest, longtime members when Charles D. Brown, of Fairfax, Va., died March 22 at the age of 102. Brown, a Golden Owl, had been a Club member for 61 years. He was noted for founding and hosting the “Transportation Table,” a weekly forum for discussion of transportation issues that for many years was a Club institution. He launched the event while he was a spokesman for the Regular Common Carriers Conference, a Washington-based trade association of the trucking industry. Chris Battle, public relations trendsetter, dies after 4-year cancer fight
National Press Club member Chris Battle, a public relations innovator, former newspaper editorial writer, and an accomplished political spokesman, died at 8 a.m. Thursday after a four-year fight against kidney cancer. He was 45. Mr. Battle, of Alexandria, Va., died at his parents' home near Savannah, Ga., surrounded by his parents and wife, Dena Battle. He is also survived by two young children, Kate and Josie. Charles Eischen, a long-time newspaperman who ran the city desk at the Marin Independent Journal and the Washington bureau for the San Francisco Examiner, died June 10, 2013 in Petaluma, Calif. He was 90. Mr. Eischen, a National Press Club member from 1962 until 2009, was awarded the Bronze Star for service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He saw action during the Battle of the Bulge and was among the leading Army elements that took the Remagen Bridge in Germany. 1974 National Press Club President Kenneth Scheibel, a decorated World War II veteran whose journalism career dated to the Roosevelt administration, died May 6 at the Envoy Nursing Home in Alexandria. He was 92. Mr. Scheibel, born in Campbell, Nebraska on May 17, 1920, to G. Alfred and Rachel K. Scheibel, graduated high school in 1937 and worked as a newspaper reporter before World War II, his son, Ken Scheibel, Jr. said. Stanley Cohen, a business journalist and Platinum Owl, died May 6 of renal failure. He was 93. “He was upstairs at the Press Club a lot,” said Debra Silimeo, his daughter-in-law and a Club member. He would often take Silimeo's husband, Daniel Cohen, to Club-sponsored father and son baseball nights, she said. Cohen organized 73 luncheons as chair of the Speakers Committee in 1982.
