Challenges Facing Homeland Security Department
The participants discussed a bipartisan joint CSIS-Heritage Foundation report on the challenges facing the Homeland Security Department. The report represents the conclusions of a task force charged with examining the organization and operations of the Department. Topics included the department's capacity to fulfill its mandate as set out in the Homeland Security Act of 2002, management, roles and missions, authorities, and resources. The panelists discussed the role of their independent groups in the 2004 presidential campaign. These groups are not new, but they (including tax statute number 527 groups) spent an unprecedented amount of money on campaign advertising. The first panel represented Republican groups and the second panel represented Democrats. Examples of ads were shown and the panelists discussed their strategies and experiences. C-SPAN's 25th Anniversary
Brian Lamb detailed his personal biography and his development of the C-SPAN cable networks. He praised the many cable executives and other persons who made it possible. 25 years ago C-SPAN was created as a new concept, a private not-for-profit corporation, and a public service paid for by the cable providers who carry it. He said his guiding philosophy is simplicity and openness, saying, "Let the American people have the opportunity to watch public events in their entirety and make up their own minds." Pride of the Sea: Fight for Survival
Mr. Waldron was interviewed about his first book Pride of the Sea: Courage, Disaster, and a Fight for Survival, published by Citadel Press. Mr. Waldron covered the story of the sinking of the Pride of Baltimore as a newspaper reporter in Baltimore. The ship, built in 1976 to represent the city, was a reproduction of an historic clipper ship. It sank on May 14, 1986 when it was struck by an unexpected squall.
