Endangered Historic Places

Possible National Housing Bubble
Participants talked about the future of U.S. housing markets in light of recent expansion within the housing industry, speculation, as well as increased housing prices and speculation. They also addressed fears that the market would soon suffer from a collapse of a housing "bubble," the potential impact of more liberal lending practices, and the state of the economy. Breast Implant Regulation
Consumer advocates spoke to reporters about the safety of silicone breast implants and call for improved approval processes by the Food and Drug Administration. They called for a congressional investigation into the process and postponement of any final safety decision until after a complete examination of records relating to a criminal investigation into manufacturers had been conducted. Mr. Hart talked to reporters about results of a survey on the "State of the Nation's Youth," which examined opinions and thoughts of young people on issues such as the future of the nation, political activities, media messages and issues they found important. The study also examined student attitudes toward educational standards, student work ethics, and school environments. Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima
Stephen Walker talked about his book Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima, published by HarperCollins. The book begins with the first atomic bomb test in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, and documents the key events of the next three weeks leading up to August 6, 1945, the day Little Boy was detonated above Hiroshima. He used the personal stories of individuals to illuminate the historic events. After talking about how he wrote the book and reading some passages, Mr. Walker answered questions from members of the audience.

Protecting Cities
Mayor O'Malley talked about the challenges and opportunities faced by the U.S. in protecting the cities from future terrorist attacks. Among the issues he addressed were the role of state and local authorities in preparing for terrorist attacks and other emergencies, federal assistance to states, and his efforts to build better infrastructures and plans in Baltimore. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.
