Trust Us?
News sources proliferate just as trust thins out for traditional media. What we are doing about it. Join us on June 30 for this town hall.
We’re told that lies travel faster than the truth. If that is so, what are journalists doing to prove to audiences that what they read, see and hear is based on verifiable facts? In a world of conflicting media standards, practices and ethics, news organizations must cope with more challenges to more facts by more people than ever. Journalists Sam Fulwood (Dean, School of Communication, American University) Elahe Izadi (media reporter, The Washington Post) and Terence Samuel (VP News, NPR) join PBS Public Editor Ricardo Sandoval-Palos in exploring, before a live audience, how politics and mis…

The first such event was held in 1913, with newly elected President Woodrow Wilson in the audience for the inaugural showdown, which was won by members of the House and Senate. The Press vs. Politicians Spelling Bee was reinstated on its 100th anniversary in 2013 and…

Just over a week from World Mental Health Day (October 10), the National Press Club and Project Healthy Minds, a Millennial and Gen-Z-driven non-profit, are convening one of the first ever discussions about mental health and wellbeing in journalism. Reporters face a barrage of challenging subjects day in and day out, including some that hit at the very core of their own identity. Despite these enormous challenges, it can feel as if the public expects reporters to tell the story regardless of the impact it will have on their own mental health. Journalists in the newsroom are joining a wider…
