Current Situation in South Africa
While visiting the United States, Mr. Mandela spoke to the National Press Club about the current situation in South Africa. He answered questions from the audience and stressed the importance of western support for a democratic South Africa. Amateur Athletics in America
Track and field athlete Mr. Lewis discussed the state of amateur athletics in America, and government sponsorship of America's Olympic teams. A four-event participant in the 1988 Seoul summer Olympics, he won the gold medal in the long jump, the 200 meter sprint, and anchored the 4 by 100 meter relay team. He finished second to Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson in the 100 meter dash, the premier track and field event. Several months after the games, Mr. Lewis was awarded the gold medal. Exiled Haitian President Address
Last September Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was ousted after a military coup. He was the first freely elected leader of Haiti. Last month he negotiated an agreement with Haiti's interim government that would have allowed him to return to power. The Haitian parliament, however, has indefinitely delayed the vote that would have led to his return. Mr. Aristide talked about his exile and about conditions in Haiti.

Mr. Perot spoke to the National Press Club audience about his thoughts on the American political system. In response to questions, he indicated that if individuals working independently successfully file him as an independent candidate in all 50 states, he would run for president. This was Mr. Perot's third appearance before the National Press Club.

Journalism in the United States
Mr. Rather addressed the Press Club on the condition of journalism and freedom of the press in the United States. Prior to Mr. Rather's speech, Mr. Kham was presented with the National Press Club's International Freedom of the Press award. Ms. Bauer accepted the National Freedom of the Press award.
