Arnett Fourth Estate Award
Each year the National Press Club honors an outstanding journalist at the annual Fourth Estate Award Dinner. This year's recipient is CNN correspondent Peter Arnett, who reported from Baghdad during the Persian Gulf War. Mr. Arnett described his career as a journalist and his experiences as the only American journalist in Baghdad during the Persian Gulf War.

Efforts of the Constitutional Commission
Retired Chief Justice Burger addressed the National Press Club on the Bill of Rights, the constitutional separation of powers, the nomination of Justice Clarence Thomas, and the work of the Commission on the Constitution's Bicentennial, which he chairs. Justice Burger was nominated chief justice by President Richard Nixon, and sat on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1969 to 1986. He also acted as assistant attorney general under President Dwight Eisenhower. The former Supreme Court Justice responded to questions from the audience following his prepared remarks.

Joint Television Venture in the Soviet Union
Mr. Donahue and Mr. Pozner spoke about a new joint television venture scheduled to be launched on Soviet TV. Mr. Pozner spoke about the failed coup by Communist hard-liners and collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, and their effects on communication and politics in that country. Phil Donahue hosts a nationally syndicated talk show in the United States, and Vladimir Pozner was the top political commentator on Soviet television until he resigned after the head of Soviet television forbade criticism of Soviet President Gorbachev in 1991.
