Press Freedom Center holds first press briefing -- update on Jimmy Lai’s trial, Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The newly formed Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club holds its first event on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Club. This will be a briefing on resumption of the national security trial of U.K. citizen Jimmy Lai, former publisher of Apple Daily, who has been imprisoned in Hong Kong for nearly four years. Media is invited to cover the event.

Bill McCarren, director of the Press Freedom Center, will give welcoming remarks. Then speakers will be Sebastien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai; Caoilfhionn Gallagher, head of Jimmy Lai’s international legal team; and Jason Rezaian, newly named director of press freedom initiatives The Washington Post, who once was held prisoner in Iran for being a journalist.

The Club issued a statement when the trial first began in December 2023.
