National Press Club looking for the best in humorous writing
For those with a deft touch at tickling readers' funny bones, the National Press Club offers the Angele Gingras Humor Award. The award is named for a longtime Club member who was good at discovering the funny side of the news.
The winner last year was Tim Murphy of Mother Jones whose humorous musings included “A Day in the Life of a Snowden-Chasing Journalist at Sheremetyevo International Airport" -- and a lengthy story on how the Pentagon would wage war on Santa Claus and the North Pole that laid out the military troops, weapons and tactics that could be used to take on Santa, his loyal elves and his sidekick Krampus, "a massive goat-demon."
The award is given for a body of work. To apply, please submit three examples of a humor feature or column that appeared in a general circulation newspaper or online journalism site in 2014. The winner will receive $750.
Submitting entries is free for Club members and $50 for non-members. The winner will be honored at a banquet at the Club this summer.
Entries may be submitted online or by the more traditional postal mail.
