Update-1: Club member Tom Young discusses new novel in latest podcast
National Press Club member Tom Young has made a successful transition from journalism to fiction writing, leveraging his journalistic skills to craft compelling narratives. In the latest Update-1 episode, Young talks with Broadcast-Podcast Team co-chair Adam Konowe about a new book he has coming out, "The Mapmaker," a World War II novel set within the French Resistance. Resistance fighters Charlotte and Phillippe, an American woman and a Frenchman, brave death or worse to evade the Gestapo and get critical information to the Allied Forces.
Young also talks about his career, beginning as a journalist and later becoming a pilot and an author. Also, he currently is commander of the National Press Club's American Legion Post 20. "The Mapmaker" is the 11th book he has written. Its release date is publicized as July 22, 2025.
In February 2022, Young discussed "Red Burning Sky," an earlier historical novel he wrote based on Operation Halyard, at a virtual Club Member-Author Team event. The operation was the “greatest aviation rescue in history,” Young said during his presentation, and it happened during WWII as more than 500 downed American flyers were extricated from Yugoslavia in 1944.
As a member of the Broadcast-Podcast Team himself, Young in April interviewed journalist Steve Herman for Update-1 about the effort to revive Voice of America and protect other USAID-funded outlets such as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
