Books & Brunch to discuss 'Longstreet' on Saturday, March 15

The National Press Club Books & Brunch group will meet virtually at noon Saturday, March 15, to discuss "Longstreet: The Confederate General Who Defied the South," by Elizabeth Varon.

The book examines how Longstreet, one of the highest-ranking generals of the Confederate Army who served alongside Gen. Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, embraced Reconstruction, supported Black voting rights and ultimately fought against his former comrades when they tried to oust the post-war government in Louisiana.

White Southerners turned against him, even blaming him for the South's defeat in the Civil War.

To receive a Zoom link, please email Fay Iudicello at [email protected] by Thursday, March 13. Those who RSVP should expect to receive the invitation at 9 a.m. on March 15.

Planning ahead? The group will discuss "Long Island" by Colm Toíbín at its meeting on Saturday, April 19. The novel follows up on "Brooklyn" and explores the original characters as they have progressed in life 20 years later.
