DC Mayor Muriel Bowser will speak at a National Press Club Headliners Coffee and Conversation on Friday, February 21 at 11 a.m. Bowser will deliver an update on the future of the city.

Bowser is serving her third term as mayor of Washington, DC. She began her political career as an elected official in 2004 as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and was elected to the DC Council in 2007. She is the first African American woman to be elected to three, four-year terms as mayor of an American city. Her administration has focused on DC's economic competitiveness and diversification, affordable housing production, public school enrollment and improving resident satisfaction in city services.

Washington, DC, has limited home rule and, because it is not a state, Congress can intervene in DC affairs. President Trump on the campaign trail threatened a federal takeover of the city, but has since met with Bowser at Mar-a-Lago. Bowser in a statement said they discussed "shared priorities," including the status of the federal workforce, and said she was "optimistic" that they could find common ground.

The event begins at 11 a.m. and is open to members of the National Press Club members, their guests, and credentialed media. Registration is essential to obtain access to the club. For all registration-related questions, please email [email protected]. All guest information must be confirmed 72 hours before the start of the event.

To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put DC in the subject line and email it to [email protected]. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 9 a.m. on the day of the event.
