Club member-photojournalist Christy Bowe to discuss new book with former Rep. Connie Morella, Friday
Photojournalist Christy Bowe and former member of Congress Connie Morella, R-Md., will talk about Bowe's new book and career on Friday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. at the Club. The event, in conjunction with the next meeting of the Photography Team in the Cosgrove Lounge, is open to all Club members.
"History in the Making: A Focus on Five U.S. Presidents" (Brown Books Publishing, 2024) is Bowe's second book offering her visual stories of the chief executives from Bill Clinton through Joe Biden. Bowe is an award-winning news photographer covering official Washington -- from the White House to Capitol Hill to the Supreme Court -- for Zuma Press, Getty images, and others. Her photos of over 30+ years chronicle the workings of presidents, cabinet secretaries, justices, diplomats, and members of the House and Senate.
At the Club, Bowe is a long-time event photographer with her photos of political, religious, and business leaders, and from the entertainment world hanging on the Club walls. Bowe's photos at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, won multiple awards that year from Prix de la Photographie Paris. Her first book, "Eyes That Speak,", was published by SheaDean Publishing in December 2021.
Morella represented Maryland's 8th congressional district from 1987 to 2003. A lifelong Republican, Morella was elected and reelected in largely Democratic Montgomery County. Throughout her tenure she displayed an independent streak, becoming a leading advocate for women, children, and families. After her Congressional service, Morella was named by President George W. Bush as U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris from 2003 to 2007. In 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden for president.
The Nov. 8 event starts with a photo display followed by a conversation between Bowe and Morella, recounting stories behind Bowe's most iconic photos of the five U.S. presidents. Bowe will also discuss the individuals who inspired her photos over the years, and people influencing her work today.
Copies of Bowe's book will be available for sale and signing by Bowe after the program. Participants are invited to stay following the event for a pay-your-own-way happy hour and taco bar at the Reliable Source restaurant.
