The National Press Club’s News Photography Award
The News Photography Award recognizes excellence in visual journalism that documents news events of public significance. This award honors photojournalists whose images inform, illuminate, and deepen public understanding through powerful visual storytelling.
Winning entries will demonstrate journalistic rigor, technical excellence, and strong narrative impact, conveying context, emotion, and meaning through photography. Judges will give particular consideration to images that reflect original reporting, timeliness, and public impact, as well as the photographer’s ability to tell a compelling story visually.
Eligibility:
- News photographs published in traditional news media or submitted to stock photo agencies and published for syndication are eligible for consideration.
- The award is intended to honor professional photojournalists, whether working for news organizations or publishing through syndication platforms.
The following are not eligible:
- Photos produced for house organs, pamphlets, or reports
- Content from advocacy outlets operated by interest groups, including trade associations, consumer organizations, or government agencies
Entry Requirements
- Entrants must submit a digital copy of the photograph as it was originally published (print, online, or broadcast).
- The date of publication must be visible.
- A working URL showing where the image appeared must be provided and accessible to judges.
- Caption information must be included.

Image Integrity & Editing Standards
Photographs must accurately reflect the scene as it occurred. Images may not be altered in Photoshop or by any other means to add or remove elements from the original image.
Permissible adjustments include:
- Cropping
- Dodging and burning
- Minor color correction
- Removal of dust or scratches
Any manipulation beyond these adjustments will result in disqualification.

General Eligibility:
Through its journalism awards, the National Press Club seeks to recognize and honor professional journalists who have produced outstanding work in service of the public, either independently or as employees of editorially independent news organizations.
In evaluating entries, judges will give weight to evidence of:
- Individual enterprise
- Fairness
- Accuracy
- Objectivity
The following are not eligible:
- Content produced for house organs
- Theses or academic reports
- Advocacy outlets operated by interest groups, including trade associations, consumer organizations, or government agencies
Entries may be submitted by journalists or by their employers. Entrants are responsible for ensuring judges can access all submitted materials and must provide passwords or access credentials where required.
Non-traditional entrants are welcome, provided they clearly explain in supporting materials how their work meets the Club’s journalistic standards. Such entrants should include a brief statement describing their editorial independence.
