The transformation of the U.S. power system from fossil fuel to renewable energy dominance is creating numerous investing opportunities. Those investors with the expertise to understand, identify and assess various complexity are able to identify opportunities that provide incremental return without commensurate risk. Such complexities may arise for example from the project finance vs. corporate structure that is used, the tax equity component unique to wind and solar projects, or the ability to capitalize on limitations of bank’s project finance lending policies. Furthermore, many of these opportunities can be captured through custom private lending that often provides returns similar to equity, but with the downside protection afforded to debt.
