Headliners FAQ
What is the Headliners program?
The National Press Club’s Headliners program is a signature speaker series featuring influential leaders, policymakers, journalists, and newsmakers discussing issues of national and global importance.
All speakers appear at the National Press Club without compensation. Speakers are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses and do not pay fees to participate.
How is the Headliners program organized?
The Headliners program is overseen by the National Press Club, with strategic input from the Headliners Committee and operational execution managed by Club staff.
This structure replaces prior programming groups, consolidating all speaker programming under a single, coordinated framework.
Who selects Headliners speakers?
Speakers are identified and recommended through a collaborative process involving the Headliners Committee, the Committee Chair, Club leadership, and staff.
The Headliners Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Governors, plays a central role in developing the speaker pipeline. Final approval of speakers rests with the Committee Chair, Club leadership, and designated staff.
Can I suggest a speaker?
Yes. The Club welcomes thoughtful speaker suggestions from members and non-members.
Submissions should include:
- A brief biography of the proposed speaker
- The topic they would address
- Timing considerations or availability
Suggestions may be submitted online here.
Can I book a speaker directly?
No. The National Press Club does not offer a booking process for Headliners speakers. All speakers are selected through the Club’s internal review and approval process.
What criteria are used to select speakers?
The Club considers several factors when evaluating speakers, including:
- Newsworthiness – Relevance to current events and public discourse
- Impact and influence – The individual’s role in shaping policy, industry, or public understanding
- Exclusivity and access – The degree to which the speaker is otherwise available to the press
- Program value – The anticipated interest and benefit to Club members and the broader audience
What is the format of a Headliners event?
The National Press Club has evolved the format of its Headliners series over time to reflect the needs of speakers and audiences.
While the Club is best known for its traditional luncheon programs, event formats vary depending on the speaker, anticipated audience, and scheduling considerations. In addition to luncheons and traditional newsmaker or press conference-style events, the Club also hosts formats such as Coffee & Conversations, Cocktails & Conversations, dinners, and other creative approaches to presenting speakers.
This flexibility allows the Club to accommodate a wider range of voices while maintaining the integrity and impact of the Headliners program.
Who can attend Headliners events?
Attendance varies by program. Some events are open to members and guests, while others may be media-only or invitation-based.
When are Headliners events scheduled?
Events are scheduled based on speaker availability and news relevance. While many are planned in advance, some may be organized quickly in response to breaking news.
Where are Headliners events held?
Most events take place at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with select programs offered in virtual formats.
Are Headliners events broadcast?
Select events are broadcast or recorded and made available through press.org and partner media outlets.
