Special Event

The National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists, and the Fourth Estate Award is the Club’s top honor for a lifetime of distinguished contribution to American journalism.

This year we honor Bob Schieffer, chief Washington correspondent for CBS News. The Club’s Board of Governors unanimously voted to give the award to Schieffer for his exemplary career at CBS as well as his extraordinary contributions to journalism and the Club over the years.

Schieffer, who has served as CBS chief Washington correspondent since 1982, is host of “Face the Nation.” In addition, he hosted the CBS Evening News before Katie Couric took over the anchor's chair, handled every major beat in the CBS Washington bureau and moderated two presidential debates. Over the course of a journalism career that spans nearly half a century, Schieffer has won seven Emmy Awards and been inducted into the Broadcasting/Cable Hall of Fame, in addition to countless other honors.

In addition, he is the author of "Bob Schieffer's America," "Face The Nation: My Favorite Stories from the First 50 Years of the Award-winning News Broadcast," as well as the 2003 New York Times bestseller, "This Just In: What I Couldn't Tell You On TV" and "The Acting President," published in 1989.

He has always been a mentor and role model for younger journalists, and he has been an active and contributing Club member for years.

Schieffer’s CBS colleague, the late Walter Cronkite, was the first recipient of the Fourth Estate Award. Other honorees include Eric Sevareid, Carl Rowan, Mary McGrory and Christiane Amanpour. A complete list of past winners can be viewed here. The National Press Club is pleased to add Bob Schieffer to this list of distinguished journalists.
