Five Years after Katrina: New Orleans Mayor to Speak Aug. 19
Five years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and nearly sunk New Orleans, newly-elected New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will report on the city's progress and potential at a National Press Club luncheon on Aug. 19.
Landrieu, two-time lieutenant governor of Louisiana, brother of Sen. Mary Landrieu, and son of former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu, won the mayor's office in a landslide election in February.
The hurricane that flooded New Orleans in 2005 drove many residents and businesses from the city. Now the city is facing the economic impact of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans also has a $67.5 million budget deficit.
In a state of the city address earlier this month, Landrieu said: "We will not be blind to the state of our city _ it is one that has great potential, but one that is in peril."
The luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m. Mayor Landrieu's remarks begin promptly at 1 p.m., followed by a question period that concludes at 2 p.m. Cost of the luncheon is $17 for National Press Club members, $28 for their guests and $35 for the general public. To reserve, call 202-662-7501 or email [email protected].
To submit a question in advance, put LANDRIEU in the subject line and email it to [email protected] before 10 a.m. on Aug. 19.
