Mr. Carey talked about the Teamsters' Union and the annulment of his election as president in August by a federal overseer. He denied any knowledge of a scheme to transfer union money to his re-election campaign. Three of his former aides have pleaded guilty to these charges, but Mr. Carey said, "I did not know. I was never involved." His opponent in the election was James P. Hoffa, whom Mr. Carey accused of corruption. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience.
