Presidential Candidate Buddy Roemer to Discuss Corrupting Influence in Campaigns of his Opponents

Republican businessman and former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer will discuss how large, anonymous campaign donations and special-interest money remain a corrupting influence on politics. The National Press Club Newsmaker takes place at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, in the National Press Building, 529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C. Roemer plans to cite specific examples from the campaigns of his Republican opponents and that of President Obama.

Roemer has made fighting the influence of special interests a central theme in his run for the White House, and has committed to limiting individual campaign donations to $100 or less. He says he has refused to accept any political action committee donations.

Roemer served four terms in Congress from 1981-1988, and was Louisiana governor from 1988-1992. He credits his tenure with reforms that cut unemployment by approximately half, a balanced state budget each year, linking teachers’ pay to performance, establishing education accountability standards, confronting labor unions, and signing off on campaign finance reform.

Since leaving public office, Roemer has served as chief executive officer of Business First Bank, a business community bank that did not take bailout money from the federal government. Roemer lives in Baton Rouge, La., with his wife, Scarlett, and is the father of three children. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School.
