Silver Owls Fall Hoot Oct. 21 Salutes C-SPAN’s
Thirty Years of Press Club Luncheon Telecasts

In keeping with its new theme, “Celebrating the Legacy” of the National Press Club, the Silver Owls on Oct. 21 will take a look back at three decades of C-SPAN telecasts of the Club’s Speaker Luncheons. Club members and participants in the first of the cable network programs on October 7, 1980 will be in the spotlight at the Fall Hoot and traditional roast beef dinner. The initial telecast featured Federal Communications Commission Chairman Charles Ferris and was followed immediately by a “call-in” to a panel including broadcast journalist and Golden Owl Dawson (Tack) Nail who will be inducted, along with Brian Lamb, the “father” of C-SPAN, into the coveted Order of the Owl. at the Hoot.

The evening will also include a screening of highlights of NPC luncheons over the 30 years. C-SPAN will be saluted in a prize-winner Mae Scanlan parody sung by the Owls’ Quartet. Gridiron pianist John Fluck will return by popular demand with musical background for the evening. The 12 Golden Owls inducted at the Spring Hoot will finally get newly-minted gold pins fresh from the factory.

As usual, the festivities will begin with a cash bar reception and elegant hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Owls favorite roast beef dinner with wine and the program, all still at the modest price of $35. The event is open to all Club members and guests. Head Hoot John Cosgrove plans to give special recognition to young members in the Silver Owls’ effort to expose them to the Club’s history and heritage. Wise Owls always make reservations promptly by calling 202 662-7501.
