Washington Post Executive Editor to brief media on status of imprisoned journalist Jason Rezaian, July 22

On the one-year anniversary of the arrest of Washington Post Tehran Bureau Chief Jason Rezaian and his imprisonment in Iran's notorious Evin prison, his brother, Ali, and Post Executive Editor Martin Baron will brief the media on the journalist's status in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal.

The briefing, a National Press Club Morning Newsmaker, will be held Wednesday, July 22 at 9:30 a.m. in the First Amendment Lounge. Like all Newsmakers events, this news conference is open to credentialed media and NPC members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.

Iranian authorities have held Rezaian since July 22, 2014, when Iranian Security Forces swarmed his home with no warning and took him to prison where he was held without charges. For months he was interrogated and kept in solitary confinement with inadequate medical care and no access to a lawyer.

Rezaian's brother, Ali, will give an update on the case after one year and how it looks in the post-Iran Agreement environment. He will also discuss challenges western business executives will face in doing business in Iran after the sanctions are lifted.

On July 13, Rezaian completed his third one-day trial session. Rezaian was not allowed to select his own attorney or see his case file. His lawyer is forbidden to discuss the case and has only been allowed to meet briefly with him to review the case. The trial session are held in secret and are conducted with little warning. Neither the media nor his mother, Mary, were allowed to attend the trial.
