You got it ... who's in a recently published Club archive photo
Last week, The Wire asked readers if they could identify the three people in the background of a National Press Club archive photo featuring civil rights leader Jesse Jackson arriving at the Club and moving toward the ballroom in the foreground.
The photo accompanied a recently published appreciation of Jackson's appearances at the NPC over a span of more than 20 years, written by Gil Klein, past Club president and co-leader of the Club's History and Heritage Team. Jackson died Feb. 17 at the age of 84.
The photo was taken Dec. 7, 1987, by Martin Kuhn.
Jackson is in the center of the photo, and with him, to the left (for anyone looking at the photo), is Klein, who at the time was chair of the Speakers Committee (predecessor of the current Headliners Team), and, to the right (looking at the photo), is Tom Squitieri, then the Club vice president, who died in 2024.
We haven't identified the person in the back, between Klein and Jackson, but surmise it may be a member of a security detail.
Thank you to all who participated in the identification exercise.
Incidentally, the Club's History and Heritage Team is meeting Wednesday, March 11, at noon. If you enjoyed this brain teaser, you might enjoy other items from the archives and an opportunity to share them with others through Team projects.
