VA Secretary McDonough touts record-breaking year

The VA has processed a record-breaking number of claims throughout 2023, granting $163 billion to veterans and their families, Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough told a National Press Club luncheon on Monday.

“Since President Biden took office, VA has delivered more care and more benefits to more veterans than ever before,” McDonough said. The VA processed nearly 2 million claims in 2023, a 16% increase over the previous year, he said.

McDonough attributes the uptick in part to the PACT Act, legislation enacted last year to ensure that service members exposed to toxic substances, such as Agent Orange, or toxic particulate matter from burn pits in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, receive both current and retroactive benefits.

“Since September 11, 2001, many (service members) have experienced multiple deployments, and come home gripped by both the visible and invisible wounds of war,” McDonough said. “That impact on their lives, in some cases, will continue long after the guns of war have silenced.”

“It's our job as a nation to provide those vets, families, caregivers, and survivors the benefits and care for those conditions,” he added.

McDonough also touted a 15-year high in hiring at the Veteran Health Administration and the Veterans Benefits Administration, which he said has helped the department quickly process the new claims.

“The claims process is overwhelmingly moved by a simple entry point, which is more people reviewing claims,” McDonough said.

With Veterans Day this Saturday, McDonough urged former service members to take advantage of the department’s growth, regardless of their history with the VA.

“Any vets watching today, we want to serve you," he said. "Please apply now. Please reapply if you've been denied before.”
