Silver Owl Howard Tucker, 86, dies; maintained grandfather clock in Truman Lounge
Howard M. Tucker, a Silver Owl National Press Club member and participant in many Club social and charitable activities, died Nov. 17 from complications of pneumonia. He was 86.
A native of Washington, Howard joined the NPC in 1985 and helped organize charity fund-raising "cigar nights" before smoking was banned in the Club in 2007. He also organized Chesapeake Bay fishing trips with NPC colleagues.
As an investment banker, financial analyst and consultant, Howard worked for such firms as J.P. Morgan, Legg Mason, Potomac Asset Management and Capital Insights Group. He was a member of a U.S. Treasury Department task force on balance-of-payments in the late 1960s and served on the boards of the American Horticultural Society, Monarch Enterprises and Science Management Associates.
He is survived by his wife, Megan Evans, who noted that Howard was a member of numerous organizations, including the Finance Analysts Federation, Washington Society Investment Analysts, National Economists Club, Alexandria Seaport Foundation, Cogswell Society, Historic Alexandria Foundation, Old Dominion Boat Club, Naval and Military Club of London, and the Saints and Sinners Club.
NPC member and friend John Rahming said Howard was "a long standing member of our Friday afternoon poker and gin rummy games where he could be counted on to outfox me and such notables as the late Paul Means, Ralph de Toledano and John Oravec. I joined several of his fishing trips with the late Gerry Bastarache, Gilbert Lewthwaite and the late Ross Mark. He also took it upon himself to maintain at his own expense the grandfather clock in the Truman Lounge."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Deborah, Mark, Alex and David Tucker, and his grandchildren, Emily Tucker, Will and Annie Sherman.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Horticultural Society https://americanhort.ahs.org/ahs-support-page
