Roll call of the fallen

Members who have died since the Annual Meeting in Jan., 2012:

Roger E. Coleman Jr., a Silver Owl who was a retired public affairs specialist for several Washington trade associations.

Carl Hartman, one of the Associated Press’ longest-serving correspondents, both in Europe and in America. He was a Golden Owl and one of our most senior members of the club, having belonged for 70 years.

Ann D. Schmidt, correspondent and columnist for The Denver Post and other Colorado newspapers, and a Silver Owl. She was the widow of Richard Schmidt Jr., lawyer for the club and many other journalism organizations.

Winzola Poole McLendon, reporter for The Honolulu Advertiser, The Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Philadelphia Inquirer who covered six first ladies for The Washington Post and was a contributor to many magazines. She was a Golden Owl who for 61 years belonged to the club and its predecessor organization, the Women’s National Press Club.

Kenneth D. Blackshaw, Silver Owl and a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel with 35 bombing missions during World War II. Later a civilian public affairs officer for the secretary of defense and both the Army and Air Force, then for the Combined Federal Campaign. He was commander emeritus of the club's American Legion Post 20.

Robert D.G. Lewis, longtime Washington correspondent for both the Booth and Newhouse newspaper chains, former chairman of the Board of Governors and national president of the Society of American Journalists. He was a Silver Owl and a passionate advocate for open government and freedom of information.

William J. Raspberry, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Washington Post and 2004 recipient of the Club’s highest honor, the Fourth Estate Award for his lifetime contribution to the journalism profession. He was a 16-year member of the Press Club and a former president of the Gridiron Club & Foundation.

Quentin R. Bates, retired Agricultural Foreign Service officer and retired major in the Army Reserves. He was among the first U.S. servicemen into Europe after Pearl Harbor. A Communicator News Source member of the club for 37 years, he was a Silver Owl.
