Richard Belzer of "Law and Order SVU" Discusses JFK Assassination Conspiracy Theories

Richard Belzer may be best known for his role as Detective John Munch on "Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit," but he has also co-authored two books with David Wayne. One is The New York Times bestseller "Dead Wrong" and the other is "Hit List" which he discussed May 6 at the National Press Club.

Belzer opened the evening by introducing his good friend, Dick Gregory, with kind words and high praise about the comic turned activist who inspired him early in his career. He said that Gregory's jokes "told the truth, made you laugh, and made you think."

Belzer went on to talk about "Hit List" which is billed as an in-depth investigation into what some see as the mysterious deaths of people linked to the President John F. Kennedy assassination story. Belzer described the assassination as the "greatest murder mystery" of all time." He talked about the multi levels of alleged cover-ups of those fifty people that included columnist Dorothy Kilgallen, U2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers, and Jack Ruby, the man who killed alleged Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Belzer also presented evidence supporting the theory that there were two Lee Harvey Oswalds and how his death was set in motion by the FBI, the CIA, and the Mob. Belzer said that there is a timeline and there are witnesses who have proven that Oswald never fired a shot the day the president was killed in Dallas.

"Hit List" also presents facts and theories about the suspicious deaths of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa, socialite and Kennedy friend Mary Pinchot Meyer, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, petroleum geologist and Oswald friend George de Mohrenschildt, and more.

Before Belzer became a stand-up comic and actor, he was a newspaper reporter in Bridgeport, Conn.

There was a lively Q-and-A following Belzer's talk.

Book and Author Committee Vice President Heather Forsgren Weaver introduced Belzer.
