Rep. Sander Levin to discuss Democratic approach to trade policy, 10 am May 14
Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.) will present the Democratic argument on U.S. trade policy at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14, in the Murrow Room.
Earlier this week, the Senate filibustered legislation that would give President Obama fast-track trade authority, which is seen as crucial to completing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal with 11 Asian nations. But on Wednesday, Senate leaders announced an agreement that could lead to fast-track approval next week.
In the House, the debate over trade policy is expected to be intense. Opponents of the Asian pact, which could affect up to 40% of U.S. international trade, say it gives away too much.
Levin has introduced legislation, “Right Track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Act,” that aims to level the playing field and increase transparency of the deal's provisions.
At the Club Newsmaker, he will discuss his measure and the status of fast-track authority in the House, which he has said "is in trouble."
Like all Newsmaker events, this news conference is open to credentialed media and Club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
