NPC Members invited to intimate partner violence workshop in New York in October

Members of the National Press Club are invited to participate in a special workshop on covering intimate partner violence, to be held on Oct. 21 and 22 in New York City.

To help journalists and news organizations strengthen their coverage of intimate partner violence, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma based at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is presenting a two-day workshop: “Out of the Shadows: Reporting on Intimate Partner Violence.”

Reporting on intimate partner violence challenges news professionals, cops and courts reporters, feature writers, investigative reporters, and journalists covering neighborhoods, education or health. The workshop will feature a wide range of national and local public health and policy experts, award-winning journalists, educators, and prevention advocates. It will include background briefings as well as specialized reporting skills training to enhance journalists’ ability to report on relationship violence knowledgeably, ethically and effectively. It will examine these issues across diverse communities and special populations including teenagers, immigrants and refugees, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals.

The free workshop is open to working reporters, editors, photographers, producers or bloggers for print, broadcast or online media. Staff, contract and freelance journalists are also eligible. No more than 25 individuals will be selected for the workshop. A limited number of travel stipends will be made available.

Speakers include: Donna Ferrato, documentary photographer; Ann Jones, writer and author of "Women Who Kill"; Jan Hoffman, staff writer for the New York Times; Sacha Pfeiffer, reporter at WBUR; Emily Rothman, ssociate professor at Boston University School of Public Health; Esta Soler, founder and executive director of Futures Without Violence; Linda Mills, professor of social work, public policy, and law at New York University and the executive director of the Center on Violence and Recovery; and Kristin Lombardi, 2011 Nieman Fellow at the Center for Public Integrity.
