A Message From National Press Club President Michael Freedman

National Press Club Colleagues,

As always, our top priority is the health and safety of our members, our dedicated staff, and our guests.

To best protect us all in the midst of the escalating coronavirus pandemic, the National Press Club Board of Governors has voted unanimously to immediately suspend in-person services to Club members and guests for a minimum two-week (14-day) period (beginning Monday evening, March 16).

During this time, staff members whose duties can be performed remotely will telework. All full-time employees will be paid.

Controlled, limited access may be permitted for relevant news conferences and other specific activities that aid journalists in their coverage of the coronavirus story and help inform the general public. The Club will also utilize its website and social media channels to provide important information and help members remain engaged.

Our thanks to Executive Director Bill McCarren and his team for a remarkable job over the past several weeks in maintaining ‘business as usual,’ while re-doubling health and safety efforts in a scenario that has swiftly moved into uncharted territory.

Finally, as our nation and the world grapple with this crisis of epic proportions, the critical role of the press cannot be overstated. We turn to medical experts and elected officials for leadership – and we rely on the press to help inform and educate the public while holding those in power accountable for their words and actions through accurate and fair reporting.

The coronavirus pandemic stands as Exhibit A in reminding the world "why journalism matters.” The National Press Club stands firmly with our colleagues around the world in pursuit of truth.

Thank you for your dedication to our profession and to the National Press Club.

Mike
