Memorial service Saturday for member James G. Apple

A memorial service for James G. Apple, a prominent attorney and 26-year communicator member of the National Press Club, will be held Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m. in Old Presbyterian Meeting House, 321 S. Fairfax. St., Alexandria, Va. He died Jan. 22 at age 81.

His varied career included being a private practice lawyer, special assistant and counsel to the director during a decade with the Federal Judicial Center in Washington and president of the International Judicial Academy, where he served until his semi-retirement in 2017.

He was an amateur photographer, avid traveler and a prolific writer. He founded the International Judicial Monitor, a legal blog, and he co-authored three children’s books with his daughter.

Apple was born in Huntington, W. Va., grew up in Fort Thomas, Ky., and graduated with honors from the University of Virginia, where he was editor of the university newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. He went on to the university's law school and was managing editor of the Virginia Law Review. He then served as an Army intelligence officer at Fort Knox and Fort Meade.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jones, of Alexandria, a son, daughter and six grandchildren.
