John Fleming, Longtime Club Member, to be Buried at Arlington
John P. Fleming, a longtime member of the National Press Club and a Silver Owl, will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on June 20. He was 85 and died at home in Alexandria on March 30. The cause of death was cancer.
The 8:45 a.m. funeral at Arlington will include full military honors. A brunch will be held immediately following the service in the Ft. Meyer Officer's Club. Members of the National Press Club are invited.
Fleming was manager of government services for the National Safety Council. He was responsible for all things safety in the lives of Americans from buckling up in cars to keeping people back from animal cages in zoos to protecting them in national parks. He also served as director of public safety in Chicago.
He was devoted to the Travel Committee for 20 years and never missed a meeting, said Paula Delo, a friend at the Club and member of the Travel and House & Bar committees. After retiring, he was a frequent participant in the Club's trips.
Fleming joined the Navy as a teenager and the Army while in his 20s. He was on active duty for several years, then served in the Reserves. He retired as a major.
His daughter, a sister and brother-in-law survive him.
