Indira Gandhi, Jack Kevorkian make Club appearances this week in '82, '96

This Week In National Press Club History

July 29, 1996: Dr. Jack Kevorkian gives a fiery speech in defense of doctor-assisted suicide.

July 30, 1982: Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi makes her third appearance at a National Press Club luncheon. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister after the country’s independence, begins the family dynasty’s many visits to the Club, in 1956 and 1961. Her son, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, later assassinated, as was his mother, speaks in 1985.

This Week In National Press Club History is brought to you by the History & Heritage Committee, which is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the Club’s History through displays, panel discussions and lectures, and the oral history project.

The committee will present a distinguished panel entitled “Women Report the Civil War,” the second event this year marking the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19. The program also commemorates the 40th anniversary of the admission of women into the Club.
