Indian opposition leader Gandhi to speak at Tuesday Headliners Newsmaker

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in India's parliament, will speak at a National Press Club Headliners Newsmaker at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10. His remarks will focus on Indian democracy, freedom of speech, and sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

Gandhi heads INDIA, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties that holds 234 seats in the Indian parliament. The group is about 30 seats short of a majority.

This Headliners event is open to credentialed media and Club members only. Registration is essential.

Gandhi, a member of the Indian National Congress Party, was elected in June to the Indian parliament from the Rae Bareli district in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi, the son of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the grandson of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the great-grandson of India’s founding prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gandhi also was the guest speaker at an NPC Newsmaker in June of 2023.
