If February 29 is the last Wednesday in February, it must be Sadie Hawkins Lobster Night

Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, is the last Wednesday of the month and heralds a popular feature in the 13th floor Fourth Estate Restaurant, Lobster Night.

Sadie Hawkins’ celebrations have their root in the iconic American folk comic, Al Capp's Li'l Abner. In 1937, Sadie Hawkins was tired of waiting for the fellows to come a courtin' and engineered with her Pappy, Hekzebiah Hawkins,a foot race in which unmarried gals pursued the town's bachelors, with matrimony the consequence. The term has come to mean a turning of the tables, with women-folk asking their male pals out on a date. In this case, inviting them to Lobster Night. Or not. Men-folk are also invited to invite their gal pals.

Members pay $25, non-members $30 for a fresh one and one-fourth pound Maine Lobster with coleslaw and choice of French fries or oven crisped potatoes. Reserve 24 hours in advance at (202) 662-7638.to a assure a crustacean. A very limited number will be available for those without a reservation.

The regular Fourth Estate menu will be available for non-lobster lovers featuring grilled chicken with cashews, steak au poivre, quinoa stuffed acorn squash or curried shrimp. Desserts range from cinnamon crunchy pear crisp to silky vanilla panna cotta with ginger sauce, made in house.
