Golden Owl Ann Ewing Dies

Ann E. Ewing, 89, a Club member since 1952, died July 24.

The Washington Post obituary described her as a journalist who specialized in writing about science and who is thought to be the first to report on so-called black holes.

Ms. Ewing wrote from the late 1940s to the late 1960s for Science News, a publication of the Society for Science and the Public. Her specialties included astronomy, physics and medicine. Later she was a freelance reporter who wrote for medical trade newspapers.

The Post said Ms. Ewing joined the Navy in 1942, and during World War II she served overseas as a Navy journalist.

She joined the Washington Press Club in 1952 and was one of the first members of the NPC when it admitted women.
