Events Committee focuses on social media, politics, entertainment; announces meeting

The NPC Events Committee will have its first meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, February 7, at 8 a.m. in the McClendon Room. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

In 2012, the Events Committee will focus on three key program areas: social and entertainment, the "Get It Online" series, and political events. These will support membership recruitment and retention.

The committee will also continue to partner with other committees and outside organizations. Upcoming events include a panel discussion with Jack Abramoff on March 5, a Super Tuesday watch party on March 6, and a discussion of surveillance and privacy later in the spring.

Members interested in joining the committee are welcome to attend the first meeting, to be held over breakfast. As usual, the Reliable Source will serve complimentary Continental breakfast and beverages. Please arrive early so that the meeting can begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 9:00 a.m.

For questions or to RSVP, please contact Events Committee Chairman Anthony Shop at [email protected] or 202-681-1381.

Last year, the Events Committee continued with the tradition of organizing social events for members, including a family-friendly tour of the Smithsonian, a Speakeasy Night in the reliable source, and the ongoing jazz nights and dinner and a movie nights.

The committee also launched the "Get It Online" series, which included a panel discussion about hyperlocal news sources online, ranging from Patch.com to neighborhood blogs, and a lunchtime discussion with three women social media managers who work in government, including the Twitter manager for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

In addition to these ongoing initiatives, the committee fielded opportunities to organize events that did not fit elsewhere, such as an event featuring political cartoonists from around the world, co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State.

Finally, the Events Committee partnered with other Club committees to support their initiatives and events, including the Diversity networking mixer and a photography exhibit reception.
